Working your way through university or college is tough. It all starts out with the excitement of being somewhere new, new friends and of course, usually a buzzing social scene. However, when the work kicks in and exams need to be passed the pressure certainly does move up a notch. Which is why graduation is such a relief, but graduation is only the start, after graduation its then time to get on the career path.

If you study a specialist subject such as computer science, you may look at working for a software house or database development company. If you study law or architecture there are also defined career paths you can look to follow. However, if you have studied a more general subject you may have to get a little bit more creative.

Set yourself up with a body of work that extends beyond what you did as part of your degree, approach employers directly and don’t be put off by over the top job specifications. Employers will look at more than your CV so make sure that your interview skills are where they need to be and that you are always well prepared.

Landing that first job after University is difficult and can require a lot of patience and dedication. Keep your head up throughout and keep trying, the right opportunity will come along, that is right for you and your employer.
