Poker Practice: Concentration
Poker is a game of chance and skill. As with any game of skill, there are many ways to improve your abilities. One of the less explored methods of improving your poker game is to play concentration with a deck of cards. I have had quite a few times (especially as a beginner) where I’d quickly glance at my cards and played the rest of my hand assuming that I had the wrong cards, like the time I bet all in with a Spade flush, only to turn over Ace-King of Clubs. Let me tell you, once you pull that garbage, you never want to forget your cards again. Glancing at your cards repeatedly can also give your opponents a clue as to what you have, in addition to taking precious time away from observing your fellow players. If you can give your cards a glance when you get them, you can spend the rest of the hand calculating odds and reading your opponents’ reactions.
Give it a try: Take a deck and lay every card face down individually. Once you’ve got them all out, start turning them over two at a time. If they match-say both are 8’s, take them out. If one’s an 8 and one’s a King, face them down again and take note of their position for when their twins turn up.
Then play until you’ve gotten rid of all the cards or your spouse finds you something “productive” to do. This will hopefully help your poker game.
